Immunology

Immunology research in the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology spans the entire range of the immune system from basic immune cell function, immune responses, cancer immunotherapy, inflammatory disease and vaccine development.

Researchers are exploring the molecular and cellular mechanisms underpinning the role of the immune system in chronic inflammatory diseases, cancer, neurodegeneration and immune responses to pathogens. Researchers use functional genomics approach to discover the fundamental mechanisms underpinning cross-talk between inflammatory cytokine networks and their downstream effects on the transcriptional and epigenetic regulation of inflammatory, anti-microbial and cell death gene expression. Our research also extends from basic immunology and vaccine development to clinical translation and we are involved in transdisciplinary research in vaccine confidence. Immunology researchers utilise a broad repertoire of experimental approaches, from in vitro single cell investigations, flow cytometry, to in vivo animal models and work with clinical samples.
